This is one of my favorite Barber Dime finds.

I found it way back in the mid 70's in a park in Illinois. The park was used as a fairgrounds from 1880 - 1907 then as a Chautauqua grounds until 1932.

At the entrance (which is still there) is a little building where (according to my Mother) they used to sell taffy for 5 cents. Mom lived on a local farm with her family and went to Chautauqua when she was a small girl back in the 1920's. Some kid (maybe even her) probably lost this the first year of the Chautauqua and cried all day! Maybe his Dad just got these shiny new dimes at the bank that morning to give to the kids. Who knows!

It is interesting how this coin has toned over the years. When I found it there was no toning what so ever on it. Over the last almost 35 years it has developed this nice purple tone. And if you look closely on the reverse at about 4 o'clock you can see a die crack running from the corn stalk to the rim!
