Got back to the Old Fairgrounds once again to hunt with Keith and Austin. I found two more coins with my dime being right on top of the ground. I have never seen this before, after you locate your target just brush the leaves away and there lays a coin.

Holy Smokes man, that is just incredible!
You guys do know you all won the metal detecting site lottery?

Any theories why those coins are so shallow after all these years?

With that new machine larry you should haul in alot more! :cheer: Ironsight, there are numerous mole holes all over this woods. I myself have wondered why coins are laying on top the ground. Especially with the age. My theory is that when the moles dig their tunnels they find these coins and throw them out! Not sure if thats accurate, just a guess.

Good thought Austin, I have also thought about tree roots bringing them to the surface as well.

If that's indeed the case, my property is infested with moles. Maybe i could catch a few and train them to find coins and sell my detectors! :cheer:

On a serious note, moles probably are the case. Also, if no one has been trampling and mowing the area all those years, that might also be a factor. Guessing that site is not a corn field as heavy brush was mentioned in previous posts. As Larry mentioned, the heavy brush roots lifting coins might not be out of the question either.
Still hard to understand how them oldies are on or just about on the surface.
Who knows for sure!

If it is the moles, then i'd think there'd be some random deep coins the moles didn't get to.
Just curious, what's the deepest coin you guys found there?

I believe the deepest coin was a shield nickel at about 7 or 8 inches. Most range from on top of the ground to 3 inches or so. Not a lot of depth!

I thought I would post my best Indian Head from the Old Fairgrounds, it's an 1882 with full Liberty.
